Fradique de Menezes, president of Sao Tome and Principe , graduated in Psychological and Educational Sciences from the Brussels Free University and began his career in the Portuguese Radio Marconi Company.

        In 1986 Fradique de Menezes, who was born in March 1942, took on the role of extraordinary ambassador of Sao Tome and Principe to several European countries and to some international institutions headquartered in Europe . In that same year he also took on the role of Foreign and Cooperation Minister and in the following year he became Cooperation Minister.

        Having returned to Sao Tome , in 1989, after a two-year stay in Brussels , Fradique de Menezes dedicated himself to business. He was a member of parliament between 1999 and 2001, the year when he ran for President. He won the election defeating Manuel Pinto da Costa. In 2003, when he was visiting Nigeria he was taken unawares by a coup. After negotiations Menezes returned to his position as head of state.
